Matthew Barney: No Restraint
Alison Chernick's serviceable 2006 documentary on artist-filmmaker Matthew Barney focuses on the filming of his Drawing Restraint 9. It was set on a Japanese whaler and entailed finding a way to shape large quantities of petroleum jelly on board; Bjork talks about her music and performances, and Barney says the film was about "removing the resistance from the body" to allow for something more "emotionally positive"--one reason, no doubt, it proved such a bore. More interesting is Chernick's concise survey of Barney's intriguing early work, including weird Vaseline-covered sculptures and footage of him trying to draw while under physical restraints such as a harness, etc. 70 min. |
