Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival 2004
In recent years Onion City's opening nights have been strong, and this program of two films and three videos is no exception. Luke, a world premiere of Bruce Conner's first work on video, manipulates footage he shot on the set of Cool Hand Luke to give the silhouetted cast and crew the weird, almost heroic weight of participants in a religious ritual. Lawrence Jordan finds magic in old engravings in Chateau/Poyet, and the silhouetted legs in Gunvor Nelson's somewhat abstract Trace Elements are not just mysterious but a bit scary. Sharon Lockhart's NO (2003), in which Japanese farmers gradually cover a field with hay, is a meditation on the nobility of labor and the exploitation of land that requires a Zen-like focus. 92 min. |
