Fastpitch
Fastpitch is a form of softball played mostly by poorly financed small-town teams. Jeremy Spear, who studied art while playing ball at Yale, interrupted his career as a New York artist to join the New Jersey Gators and make this film, which is less about this marginalized, possibly dying sport than about the game's "fringe characters" and Spear's wish to chase an abandoned dream. The result is an engaging look at what baseball might have been like in the era before big money, with players who love the game struggling to survive. The film portrays its idiosyncratic ballplayers with warm, unironic sympathy, but it's often marred by an out-of-control camera that pans over its subjects too close and rapidly. 90 min. |
