The Mad Genius
From the Chicago Reader

In 1930 John Barrymore starred in Svengali, a film version of George du Maurier's Trilby; the next year brought this spin-off with much of the same cast, based on Martin Brown's play The Idol. Barrymore plays a crippled puppeteer who adopts a boy and trains him to become a famous dancer. Directed by Michael Curtiz; with Marian Marsh and Donald Cook.
