The Cocoanuts
Capsule by Don Druker
From the Chicago Reader

An eminently watchable antique, this was the Marx Brothers' first film--a literal recording of their Broadway smash hit (1929). Ponderous and not really a movie, it still shows the Marxes at their freshest. Of the two directors, Robert Florey and Joseph Santley, Groucho later remarked, "One of them didn't understand English, the other didn't understand Harpo." The cast includes the incomparable Margaret Dumont, Kay Francis, and Mary Eaton. Irving Berlin did the music. 96 min.
