Since You Went Away
David O. Selznick's all-star 1944 melodrama, with Claudette Colbert at the center of a family decimated by World War II. Selznick never really recovered from his epic achievement on Gone With the Wind; most of his subsequent films suffered from elephantiasis, and this is no exception--its 172 minutes contain much that could be done without. But John Cromwell's direction has a low-key integrity (although Selznick, retake crazy as always, had several scenes reshot by Andre de Toth), and the cast is intriguingly varied if not always on target: Joseph Cotten, Jennifer Jones, Shirley Temple, Agnes Moorehead, Robert Walker, Lionel Barrymore, Monty Woolley, and, in a comeback appearance, the silent-film actress Nazimova. |
