The Long, Long Trailer
Vincente Minnelli has the last word on 50s situation comedy in this film designed as a vehicle for Lucille Ball and Desi Arenaz at the height of their television popularity. Minnelli amplifies Lucy's character into the personification of Consumer Culture--a shrill, castrating harpy who drags the helpless Desi through humiliation after humiliation in her maniacal pursuit of middle-class bliss. The Long, Long Trailer is pure agony to watch, but it is one of the most brilliant and through dissections of this peculiarly American idiom on film. |
