Speed Racer

Capsule by Andrea Gronvall

From the Chicago Reader

The Matrix creators Andy and Larry Wachowski barrel through this adaptation of the 60s animated series, hoping perhaps that no one will notice the story is as flat as roadkill. Using hypersaturated primary colors and panoramic CGI backdrops, they've constructed a live-action adventure that plays like a cartoon, equal parts retro kitsch and futuristic fantasy. Emile Hirsch stars as the title race car driver, who mourns his dead brother while fighting corruption on the pro-racing circuit. Second unit director James McTeigue and visual effects wizards John Gaeta and Dan Glass created the blazing track sequences. With Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, and Matthew Fox as the mysterious Racer X. PG, 136 min.
