88 Minutes

Capsule by Andrea Gronvall

From the Chicago Reader

Al Pacino chews up so much scenery it's surprising there's any left by the end of this fetid thriller. Sporting a goatee and bouffant hairdo, he plays a celebrated FBI forensic psychiatrist in Seattle who's haunted by family tragedy and targeted by the serial killer he helped put on death row (Neal McDonough). As the murderer exploits the shrink's guilt and threatens his life from behind bars, it's hard to say what's funnier: the portentous close-ups of characters who may be accomplices, the incessant cell phone interruptions, Pacino's allure to chicks half his age, or Gary Scott Thompson's wooden dialogue. Jon Avnet (Up Close & Personal) directed; with Alicia Witt, Leelee Sobieski, Amy Brenneman, and Deborah Kara Unger. R, 105 min.
