The Forbidden Kingdom

Capsule by Joshua Katzman

From the Chicago Reader

Pairing Jackie Chan and Jet Li would seem like a slam dunk, but this big-budget martial arts drama, which borrows liberally from The Wizard of Oz, is something of a disappointment. Michael Angarano costars as a young man who discovers an ancient Chinese staff while looking for vintage kung fu videos at a pawnshop. During an altercation the staff magically transports him to ancient China, and in his quest to return home he's assisted by an attractive young woman (Yifei Lui) and two martial arts masters, a shambling drunk (Chan) and a taciturn monk (Li). Rob Minkoff (The Lion King, Stuart Little) directed; with Li Bing Bing. PG-13, 113 min.
